We decided to walk down Shiquan Jie (one of the main streets closest to the school) to find a restaurant. After much discussion and all of us not caring where to eat, we decide to go to a Cantonese restaurant, in English it was called Lets Rock.... Im still not sure why, they were definetely playing classical music, specifically Fur Elise. So we all sat down at the table and started looking through the menu. For some reason all Chinese restaurants have HUGE menus
. As we were looking through we found some specially tasty sounding dishes including: Monkey belly tummy, double boiled turtle, fried pig intestines, duck tongue, duck bill, every part of the inside of a pig fried, and my personal favorite pig delicacy. Now two things came to mind when reading this menu: First, it is well known through China that the Cantonese eat "everything that flies but an airplane, and everything with four legs but a table." Second, we all decided that we are coming back to this restaurant and ordering all these dishes and challenging ourselves to eat all of these amazing dishes, particularly the monkey tummy.... I mean really now, how many people can say they have had monkey tummy?
However, the most amazing part of the evening was that we talked together for the entire two hours. Now the reason this is so amazing is because it was all in Chinese. This is most likely the longest Chinese conversation we have ever had!! We talked about everything from soccer to coffee to Sex in the City. (We are hoping to soon invite them all to a coffee date followed by a Sex in the City marathon.) Yay for new friends!!
On another note, in three days we are going on vacation
! Its one of China's national holidays and everyone gets a week vacation to travel and see their families. It is one of the craziest times of the year. Plane and train tickets nearly double in price and hotel space becomes sparse. However, we decided to dare the crowds and travel. We are going to Huangshan (yellow mountain) and then Hangzhou. It is said the Huangshan is China's most beautiful mountain. Once you go to Huangshan there is no need to go to any of the other mountains in China! Even more exciting we are going to be gone for a week and the entire cost for our lodging is $56.25. (9 days). SOOOOO excited!
Hope everyone is doing well. I will keep you posted on how the vacation goes, and I am sure there will be plenty of amazing pictures.
Today I had an amazing experience! Three Korean girls from my class came to my door and invited my friends and I to dinner. This was entirely unexpected and pretty much made my day. They are all three incredibly friendly and sweet. While, they all speak much better Chinese than the three of us, (most of the Koreans no matter their level do...) they went out of their way to make sure we understood what they were saying.
