Where I stayed
Saw another of the blue birds and birds which I think were shrikes and wheatears. I also saw a stork flying which looked rather odd.
Headed towards the town of Denizli
(The Prodigy and Daft Punk).
From a distance Pamukkale just looked like a white blob on the hillside. The name means cotton castle in Turkish and on a previous visit to Turkey it had been a highlight so I was a bit disappointed with what I found this time. I remember paddling through puddles in bright white terraces which seemed to drip down the hillside like a wedding cake. You can no longer wander through the terraces. This is a good thing, although less fun, as they had become grubby, no doubt from many tourist feet. Shame though. When we arrived a group a men were working on the top terraces digging dirty stuff out. Hopefully they clean it up so it becomes an impressive sight again.
There seemed to be a lot more hotels and shops there than Iremember. As on my previous trip, we went swimming at the thermal pool with the ancient columns and rocks submerged in it. This was as awesome as before. As long as you keep an eye out for the rocks it's fantastic
Hit the road toward Fethiye in the afternoon and the landscape changed considerably into plains with larger mountains in the distance. No more fruit growing, just large fields. Passed a yellow field with low-lying purple bushes growing in it. With the horses grazing in it and the mountains in the background it was quite beautiful. Drove through the town on Guney where every roof had solar panels.
Eventually we arrived here, a picturesque lake near Yesilova. The shoreline is made up of trees, then rocks, then a substance we can't quite identify. It's a white and grey/white crust over mud. Near the lake it's really boggy. This is the best rough camp so far. Such a great spot. Once again, Euan had just looked at the map, seen a lake and headed for it not knowing what we would find. It's so great to be able to do that and discover places like this.
Common sound on the truck - velcro ripping - sandals, watches, awnings etc.
