Flag of Turkey  , Iskenderun,
Tuesday, July 22, 1997

In the morning we discovered that the water level in the nearby channel had dropped considerably as it was being controlled by the Attaturk Dam which was about 4 km away. Drove over there to have a look at it. Very impressive. All around the countryside there are elaborate irrigation channels and waterways. I reckon the turks have got their water management down to a fine art as everywhere seems so fertile. Our water boards back home could probably learn a lot from them.

The rest of the day was taken up with driving here, Iskenderun, mainly on roads we'd already driven along. The lakes we passed were all a beautiful turquoise blue. One set of hills looked like a paintbox with so many different colours - yellow, brown, green red and even a grey/blue.

More 'hairdryer', although not as bad as yesterday. It can be quite suffocating and drives everyone mad. All you can do is sit it out and suffer or lie down to try to escape it blowing in your ears. It makes it impossible to listen to your walkman or even just look out at the countryside comfortably.

Arrived in Iskenderun where it is incredibly humid. You only have to take a couple of steps to be bathed in sweat. Ashley and I had to go food shopping and the humidity was really draining. We had hoped to go on to Syria today, but Teresa's passport with her Syrian visa hasn't arrived in the DHL offices so we are staying here in a very small campsite. Hopefully, it will be there tomorrow. I don't fancy spending too much time here.
