We woke up early to head to a water town a couple of hours drive away. I don't remember the name but it wasn't Suzhou. I'll have to check with Lorraine later, since she was so good at writing all locations we were. Anyways this town was part of a large network of canals to send goods to Shanghai. It is being preserved for heritage sake, but it is still a working town, with many people who still live there, and have little to do with the tourism. It has classic architecture, and lots of little bridges with high arcs. Some of the group tried to order local Chinese beer, as we have been doing throughout the trip, and what do they bring? Budweiser, but brewed in China!
We left the town and headed back. Then we met up later to go for drinks at the top of Jin Mao tower (yes that is the one I went to by mistake yesterday!) The bar was called cloud 9, and it had a great view of the Bund and of the TV tower fully lit up. We were on the 88th floor!!!
We then left and got in taxis to head to Shanghai Grandmother's restaurant. Of course I was in a separate taxi from either Jason or Euen because I had my cell phone. This time I had a card, and he was told where to go. The card for the restaurant was also written in Chinese. So Dean and Lorraine and I head off. We get to the right side of the river, so that is a good start. But then, at a red light, the driver gets out of the cab and walks over to the street sign!!! He obviously needs some powerful glasses. We turn the corner and then again, and wouldn't you know, we've now gone in a circle! So I call Jason, and pass the phone to the driver. I guess Jason gives him verbal instructions as we finally get there a few minutes later. We were not late, but we were the last to arrive.
We had a nice meal but by then i wasn't feeling well, my stomach getting upset. They gave us each a lovely Chinese painting scroll.
We walked back along East Nanjing Road to the hotel where Mike had just arrived. We took some group photos and said our goodbyes. They were all a lovely group of people to be with.
Mike and I then went out for a couple of hours. He took me to this nice patio area of Shanghai (I'll find out the name later) then and had a good chat. He really likes being in Shanghai. I get the feeling he may never leave China, but then I can always come back to visit.
I knew I had an early start in the morning, so we didn't stay out too late. Unfortunately my stomach bothered me all night and I was in the toilet every hour. Luckily, Lorraine gave me her diarrhea medication as she was flying home on Saturday.
