Got up early to see the sun rise on the Li River, with all the limestone hills. It is a scene on the 20 Yuan note. Then had breakfast at That Old Place in Xingping before going to the local travelling market. It was a busy scene. It is a local market selling everything the local farmers and townspeople need, including things like live chickens and ducks, chicks, seeds, tools and farm implements. They even had a guy selling what was likely some homemade Rice bathtub gin equivalent. People brought their own containers, usually pop bottles, to be filled. He had a brisk business. All kinds of vegetables and other food items but also toiletries and cleaning supplies were also available. And of course it is a meeting place for everyone.
Came back and had a lovely dumpling lunch with Frank and Lorraine, and for dessert a lovely Passionfruit ice drink. Yumm!
Later in the afternoon we went for a walk near farmland. We saw a waterbuffalo at work in the fields. That is, it was eating the leftover after the rice was harvested. As we walked around we ran into this lady, and it was clear she, like the Yao lady a couple of days ago, also found my calves unusually large. She then proceeded to tell her friend to look. So where people thought I was being a bit paranoid thinking people were talking about my calves ( you see I was getting a number of stares in Yangshuo), it turns out I had reason!! THen we met anothr lady and she also was commenting on them. So I asked if I could take her photo. She looked like she was about to say no, but then thought it was ok, since she found me, or rather my calves, fascinating. It was more like a curiosity to them, not a negative.
We then went on to Pam's Cooking school. Pam is an aussie who now lives in Yangshuo, and a friend of our tour leader Jason. So we learned how to cook a few chinese dishes, which we then ate as out dinner. It was fun, but a little challenging as once everything is prepped, and you start cooking, you can't stop as you are cooking at high heat in the wok. We made steamed Chicken and mushroom with Goji Berries, then stir-fried spicy pork tenderloin with julienned veggies, stir fried green veggies, spicy eggplant. Our first dish was egg dumpling filled with Minced pork and mint. It was all so yummy and I didn't do a bad job of the cooking, if I do say so myself.
Afterwards we went to West Street and had a beer and some had dessert before retiring.
