On the morning of first December I took my backpack(which weighed 16 kg, not too bad but could be better) and stepped out of the door. Walking towards the bus stop i tried to implant it to my mind that i am leaving home for a quite long time. No success.
The flight to Frankfurt was really uneventful, it wasnt even delayed. In Frankfurt i had four hours to kill before my host through hospitalitycub named Jochen would arrive at home. I heroically tramped around for an hour with my backpacks and then gave up by going to the cafe and having some hot chocolate. In the evening i arrived at Jochens and Renatas place. They live pretty close to the center of the city so i took a stroll down there after ditching my backpacks. Jochen works as a traffic planner and he is one of those people who is lucky enough to work in the field he loves. He collects public transport tickets which occupy the entire attic with their countless numbers, namely over 10 000. Besides that he has thousands of pictures of old trains and trams.
The next day was already much more eventful. Arriving at Frankfurt Airport checkin i am welcomed by the news that my flight to Bahrein has been delayed and i cant make my connecting flight to Sydney on time. After waiting three hours in line i finally got offered a solution to stay in Bahrein overnight and catch the flight to Sydney next day. As i am privileged to have all the time in the world right now i kindly accepted. After a five hour flight and some more waiting in line to get to the hotel in Bahrein i was at last heading out of the airport. The expectations were high as it was supposadly warm outside. And it was. The first feeling of summer air on your face after arriving from under freezing temperatures is just wonderful. You may try to picture it to yourself at home and think that there are warm in other parts of world but your brain doesnt actually realize it before you first feel it on your skin. We were taken to Hilton hotel where i climbed straight into bed as it was well past midnight already.
The next morning when i opened my eyes i was greeted by warm rays of sunlight peeking through the crack in the curtins. I hurried out of the hotel and took this picture in a nice 28 degree sunshine. No more comments needed. I made a little walk through the city. The contrasts are really big. The new skyscrapers and promenades close to the beach are soon replaced by narrow dirty streets and bleak houses a few hundred metres inland. There are a lot of small shops and each and every one of them seems to sell everything from food to plasma TVs. The day flew past and soon i discovered myself from the plane again. Though this time they had no intention to let me out anytime soon. After three hours of flight we were over India. Now India is a country very very far from Estonia. "Where the f... we are going to fly the next 13 hours?" was the question that kept haunting me. Well i fell asleep at some point so i cant be sure they didnt make circles during that time but it took about 5 hours just to fly over Australia. Anybody fancy around the oz trip with bikes as the next project?
