We went down to the beach to see if we could find oil. Unfortunately, it was all we could see. The ocean was tepid, and despite being told by my mother not to, I couldn't help but touch the oil balls washing up with every wave.

The oil particles in the wake are much smaller than the oil patties that littered the white shore lines. The oil patties are more solid, wrapped in sand and gooey on the inside. Up and down the beach there were volunteers with HAZMAT suits and shovels, and families playing on the beach like nothing was wrong.

We were only on the beach for approx 30 minutes, and I managed to still get a sunburn except in two places that I had scratched myself with oily fingers.

I also made friends with a grasshopper whose back legs were slightly coated in oil. He took refuge in climbing up my arm from the oceans edge, and I carried him to safety. He was... eating? the oil off his legs, or removing it with his face.

Either way, as we drove along the coast to Florida, it was very heartbreaking to see the giant rainbow oil slicks that seemed to cover the vast majority of the water top, as far as the eye could see.
