We took the train from Victoria Station to Colchester. We checked into our hotel, the Red Lion  Red Lion Hotel

which we recommend and we then proceeded to tour the town. We stopped at a nice place The What Bar for lunch. Lunch at The What Bar

It had an outside area where we enjoyed our meal and a couple of pints of ale.

Colchester was the first of the original Roman settlements in Britain and was then known as Camulodunum which honors a Celtic God. The Normans invaded the area in 1066. Construction on this Norman Castle was started around 1074 and was fortified around 1085 to protect to from Danes. Norman Castle, Colchester

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Colchester and we wish we had more time to visit other historical attractions but we had to move on in order to meet our ship in Harwich.
