We came into Växjö that looked like an interesting place to stop. We drove out to Kronoberg Castle which is located on the shore of Lake Helgasjön. It was built in the 15th century by the bishop of Växjö.

Kronoberg Castle was seized by rebels led by Nils Dacke in 1542. The rebels were defeated in 1543. The king strengthened the castle to prevent new rebellions. It was completed in 1580. The ramparts were armed with 50 cannons.

Today it is in ruins but still in good enough condition that one can still fathom the strength of the fortification.
