We arrived early in the morning at our first Norwegian port, Bergen. Bergen was the departure point for most of the Norse who emigrated to America starting in 1825. My family left this port on 31 March 1850 bound for their new home.

The first place we stopped at was the tourist office to get information on the town and to convert some currency into Norwegian Krone. We had to wait a bit as the facility was just opening. After that chore was done, we walked across the street where there was an open market. The beauty and smell of flowers and the scent of fresh red strawberries was offset by the strong smell of fish. We spotted an elegant old windjammer moored across the bay. We walked over to this area which is quaintly called Gamle (or old town). We made our way up to where the ship, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl, was moored. Being an old sailor, I had to have my picture taken by this beautiful veteran of the Seas. Statsraad Lehmkuhl

Gamle had a lot of shops catering to the tourist but it was still charming with the multiple colors and decided slant of the old buildings. Gamle, Bergen

We finally spotted one of the famous old Norwegian trolls at a storefront!   Marilyn with her Troll friend

We then went to the Floybanen which is the funicular that goes up to Mount Floyen and normally provides a beautiful view of Bergen. Unfortunately,. the weather was poor, lots of fog and a light drizzle. Nonetheless we ascended and were able to (barely) view the area through the occasional breaks in the clouds. After a nice visit here, we reboarded the Westerdam bound next to Hellesult.
