Day Five was a short hike to Barafu Camp. On the way to Barafu, we passed completely into the alpine desert, nothing but rock and more rock. Barafu is around 15,500 feet and is the last camp before the summit. Barafu means ice in Swahili, so this was "Ice Camp." And it hailed miserably that afternoon at camp. We hit the sack around 6:00 p.m. to prepare for our midnight climb.
I want to take a second here to mention that the food was delicious. Every meal started with some sort of soup. Our favorite was cucumber soup. These weren't freeze-dried out of a package. They were homemade up on the mountain. Amazing chicken, beef, vegetables, spices, and sauces. And always tea because Africa (like the rest of the world) was owned by England at some point.
