Today, I bought my plane ticket to Bangkok. I leave June 17, 2009, at 11:40 a.m. from Chicago O'Hare Airport. I decided that since this is my first concrete step toward my trip, I should commemorate it with my first blog entry (it also gave me an excuse to get this thing up and running).

Now, I've bought several things to go toward my trip (a backpack, hiking shoes, a trial pair of "travel boxers", and many other items), but nothing I have bought before now would hold me to taking the trip. I had no doubt in my mind that I would be traveling, but until now, everything I had bought I could have either returned or just used in my normal life. If, however, I don't board this flight, I'm out about $800.

When I decided to open my blog with this entry, I thought about saying something about how now after purchasing this ticket, it's all more real. Now, I KNOW I'm going, instead of just thinking about it. But that's not true at all. From the instant I decided I was going to go on this journey more than a year ago, I've know it would happen. The only difference now is that I know a few more details.

There are still a ton of things to do in the two months before I fly away (actually, less than two: I'll be in Chicago with my family for about a week before I leave): I need to get a visa for Thailand, I need more passport photos and photo copies of my important documents, I need vaccinations, I need to apply to the school at which I will be getting my TEFL certification. I still have to finish this semester at college and graduate. But all those things are just trivialities. They are not things I need to do before I begin a journey; I'm already on it. I've been on a journey for 22 years, and this will be just a change of scene as I continue my global sojourn.
