Every one of the folks who volunteered genuinely has a love for animals. It was the Best feeling to be surrounded by people like that, especially coming from a place where folks can shoot an animal without hesitation because they can. If one is in danger or feeding a family, yes, but a nuisance or just because...hmmm, just does not sit well with me (never has, but I've never said anything before). I'd rather be around people more like minded. With that being said I will learn to shoot and gun and own one, but would ONLY ever use it to defend myself, company or my babies.
I'm discovering several things about myself during this journey and know and feel life changes happening for the better. They had already begun the day I left YK and are increasingly happening.
Each day at Soi was an incredible feeling. I can't even begin to count the number of dogs I walked and socialized with. There are so many hard luck stories, but these dogs (and cats) are so well taken care of, it's quite a beautiful thing.
Soi Dog is such a well organized place and the volunteers spend so much time for their residents. There are 4 runs on the A side and 4 on the B side, each with between 16-20 dogs. There is an old age run, puppy run, disabled , a C run for dogs in medical need and shy run. There are also two hotel runs which are the dogs that have been adopted and are waiting out their quarantine time. Lastly the Old Age run where some of the neatest characters reside and will live out their lives there.
Soi has sterilized so many street dogs and placed them back on the streets, otherwise they'd have over 800 dogs at the shelter. They currently have 400. The street dogs actually do quite well on the streets provided they are put back where they were taken from. The 4 dog catchers do a remarkable job of that.
Diana & Mark were just gems to work with and are very dedicated to Soi, as are Reggie and Gill (founder). Remarkable and wish there were more of them in this world.
The best feeling, aside from giving love to those animals who needed it most, was gaining the trust of Red, one of my fav's at Soi Dog! I wish I had taken a picture, damn it!!!
