We haven't had a chance to do much touring around cause we’ve been playing 2 games a day, then opening ceremonies the previous evening. We’re staying in Aldrans just outside of Innsbruck up in the mountains. Our hotel is old and our rooms are small, but the view is Amazing which makes up for everything. Well, that and the fact we’re living next door to a farm-type property with open fields in the back. Dairy cows (hence the awakening to the sounds of moo’s) and horses are next door.
The opening ceremonies were quick and easy. Not like the old days. We were able to sit up in the stands and listen to the local music & mayors of each community make their speeches. They were nice and short. Then we listened to the broomball delegates speeches and watched the official faceoff to open the games. We hung out afterwards to watch a women’s match and check out the competition!
By the time we got home, nobody was really that tired, so we all hung out in one of the rooms for about an hour doing the team bonding and enjoying a night cap of either spiced rum or crown royal. Twas the perfect way to end the evening and have several laughs in the meantime.
We’ve been playing some great broomball and are pretty pleased with ourselves. As of this writing (can’t post it the night I write this cause the wireless signal is too weak) we are 3 wins, 1 loss. The one loss was a great game and if we had another 1-2 minutes, we would have likely tied the game up cause we were putting on the ritz!
Sherry’s been one of our van drivers and is doing a great job. 2 out of 5 of the arena’s are within 10 minutes of our stay (without rush hour traffic). The other two are about 25-30 minutes away and the last one is in Germany, so about a 40 minute drive. We play there tomorrow afternoon.
Game 1 vs Australia was 1-0 for NWT, then game #2 was 2-1 against Ontario Looney Canucks for NWT, and game #3 was 1-2 against Ontario Wicked Ice for Ontario, game #4 was 8-0 against Japan. Two more games tomorrow.
We decided to head down to a Japanese restaurant for dinner this evening and had a bit of an adventure getting there. Ended up going a bit too far and got lost for about 10 minutes. Sherry asked for directions and got us back on track. We found a 'free’ parkade and set off on foot to find the place. We did within short order. Had an awesome dinner and Val had her heart set on going to the casino, so we decided to leave the van parked and walk over to it. Wow this place has some very old buildings that are still thriving.
When we got to the casino we thought OK, we’ll stay if it’s a non-smoking one for an hour max. Val told us the website said it was really, really nice. By the time myself and BA got in (checked in) we were going to meet the gang upstairs, but when we arrived they were heading down cause we weren’t appropriately dressed. Well, Chris didn’t have a suit jacket on – we had sweat pants...go figure! We only hung out there for about 30 minutes. It was a very, very lame casino. I came out with 20 Euro’s though.
We really enjoyed the walk back to the van cause the buildings were so beautiful. Perfect time of year to enjoy the place cause there were very few folks out on the streets. Did a bit of window shopping along the way back to the van which is the best way to shop.
Well, we ended up taking one wrong turn and ended up in Tolfs, which is a page right out of the book of Hansel and Gretel – picture perfect. Decided to turn around, then got back on track. Yaaaay Marty!! Gwen is officially fired as a navigator – heheheh.
By the time we got back to the hotel it was pretty quiet. None of the staff appeared to be around, bar restaurant closed so we thought we’d head to the gas station to grab some beer so everyone could sit around, have one and many laughs in between to help end off the night. It was only 9:30 so too early to go to bed. Had many a giggle and a couple beers which was just perfect – more team bonding!
Had a shower and decided to just crash for the night. Put a few things out on the balcony to keep them cool and had one last listen to the cows mooing. Good night dairy girls.
That’s it for now, until the next day or two!!!
