The next day I drove across to Harpenden, stopped off at Hitchin as my
knee was a bit sore and I needed a break.  It is a middle sized town
about 30 minutes from Luton, with lots of second hand shops!  I managed
to visit most of them in the hour I allowed myself there.  I realised I
had been there before with Heather and David.

I have now done enough driving in the UK not to get lost (too often)
when taking the 'back' roads.  I learnt to LOOK for the green signs
when coming to a roundabout - and not the white ones - the green are
the national signs and come first and are what are important, and the
white are the local ones, which can be very confusing if you forget to
look for the green ones!  Anyway, I have now got this firmly in my 'UK
driving info memory cells'!

I had lunch with Kay and Peter Doyle in Harpenden who are one of my 'homes away from home' and where I had left my excess luggage when I went to mainland
Europe.

Again I headed across country - drove for a couple of hours and then
stopped at Burford - another lovely village built on either side of the
road that goes from a ridge down the side of the hill - but no second
hand shops!  It had lots of cafes and touristy shops instead.

I have realised previously, and was reminded again this trip, that many
of the modern roads actually follow the route that Roman roads took.
If a road goes along a ridge, and/or if it is very straight it is
possible that it is following a Roman road.  There are some well-known
Roman roads, such as The Foss Way, and one of the roads that goes west
from Glastonbury.

I arrived at Caroline and Guy's after stopping at the local shop to buy
beer - it was amazingly hot, especially compared to the day before.
That was Wednesday - and yet by Friday there was flooding in the area!
