Tonight I was at the first of three travel talks from the Travel Shop I plan to attend. This one was entitled "Travelling in Europe" and featured speakers from Contiki, TravelCuts, and Hostelling International.
Overall I didn't find this particular talk to be very helpful. The focus was rather general and covered much of the information I've picked up already online. That being said, if I hadn't done the research beforehand, the information would have been invaluable and it certainly wasn't a waste of time. After the talk itself, I got to have some of my specific questions concerning digital cameras and security in hostels answered. I'm at the point right now when my concerns are mostly with the day-to-day minutiae of managing a backpacking trip in Europe. I do, however, still plan to attend the other two talks I've signed up for, "Backpacking for Beginners" and "Packing 101," because I feel they will provide some of the more specific information I'm seeking.
Another awesome thing that came out of tonight happened while speaking with the woman who gave the Hostelling International talk. She's been working for them for 15 years, I believe, and has tonnes of personal experience backpacking around the world. While speaking with her I referenced a few things I've come across in my research, such as the Let's Go podtours and RailSaver, and afterwards she gave me her card and said to e-mail her because she'd like me to write a blog entry for them. Needless to say, I'm definitely excited and plan to send her an e-mail in the morning to get some more information. Hearing that has definitely made me feel much more prepared when it comes to this trip and I'm even more excited than ever.
