I was promised a desert. Now in my experience, which is limited Ill admit, deserts are meant to have little or no rainfall. I was unsure so I consulted a specialist (Mr E. Lopez - if you have any arid landscape based queries I can put you in touch, hell be happy to help) and, backed up by the specialist knowledge provided by the Mexican education system, he informed me that my suspicions were correct: deserts have little or no rainfall. As it rained so hard at Tatacoa the one night I was there that I was unable to leave the next day until 2pm, I have my concerns about its classification as a desert. Nonetheless it was pretty cool-looking and so I wasnt disappointed as such.

What it did have, which I wasnt expecting, was an observatory from which I got to geek it up good looking at stars, galaxies, nebulae and clouds. Lots of clouds. In the intervening periods (actually they were more like snatches than periods) I did manage to see the Andromeda Galaxy thru a telescope and (during the day and using a special filter) a sunspot.

I also met a couple there who I left with. We got dumped by our lift in Villavieja which was the nearest village and decided to stay there. Amazingly Andrés (Colombian) and Valentina (Italian) achieved the extremely difficult by being tighter than me. As a result we managed to blag a free nights accomodation from the local cops, who let us string up our hammocks in some random community centre. Like a true Brit I then instigated spending all the money wed saved plus more on getting drunk.
