In San Giovanni church, I pay 2E to see tomb of Ilara Del Carretto
“which is a masterpiece of Italian funerary sculpture” (church
literature). It is lovely. It is a tomb of a wealthy woman. The dog at her feet is a symbol of
fidelity and I can see the details of its ribs and muscles. Above it
are dona al volt santo from 1896. The cathedral also has a museum
is also painting of Saint Gizolamo one of the few saints shown old. I'm
lucky to catch the sunlight coming through a stained glass window at
just the right angle to show colors on the stonework
10:30 a.m. Take train 78 km to Firenze (Florence). Train takes 75 minutes
and ticket is 5.1E. There are three train stations in Florence. Main
station is Firenze S.M.N. (Santa Maria Novella). Stay at Hotel Berna
www.hotel-berna.it. Just a
five minute walk from train station. 60E for room with tv and wi-fi. 8E more for breakfast in a lovely
breakfast room. The receptionist is very cheerful and we are happy that she was able to book tickets for us for Ufizzi and Academy museums.
I rest while Steve walks around town. Florence's main sites are well suited for walking and our hotel has an excellent location near the Duomo. We have dinner at a Chinese restaurant.
