Hello I am in Yangshuo, near Guilen in southern China. It is very beautiful here, we just finished a day cycling around the area and having lunch at a local farmhouse. To get here involved an overnight sleeper train from Guangzhou to Guilen, which was absolute chaos (so glad I booked a guided tour!). Because it is Chinese new year this week, it seems that most of China was on the train going hoe for the holiday, it was incredibly hectic and crowded at the stations, although once on the train not too bad. We slept on 3 storey bunks 'hard sleepers', and then took another bus to get to Yangshuo. Yesterday Kathleen and I took a caligraphy clas, I was excepionally good at it, so Kathleen got jealous as you will see in the photo.
The food is ok so far, although some people took a cookery class yesterday which started in a local food market where you could buy puppy dogs; they weren't for pets! I knew this was going to be on view at some point but its still a bit shocking. It was disturbing enough seeing the live turtles and frogs sat in crates outside restaurants in Hong Kong...
The group is getting on pretty well, much nicer to be in a smaller party I think, and the average age is much higher than in south america so I dont feel like a granny! Tomorrow we fly to Xiamen.
