Let's check out the Croatian islands! Off to the tourist information with a rough plan. After many 'No, is not possible' we have a plan.
Ferry Split to Bol, Brac..........sleep one night
Ferry Bol to Jelsa, Hvar ........sleep one night
Bus Jelsa to Hvar Town..........sleep one night
Ferry Hvar Town to Ubi, Lastovo..........sleep two nights
Ferry Ubi to Vela Luka, Korcula.............sleep one night
Bus Vela Luka to Dubrovnik ................sleep two nights
Fly to Lisbon, Portugal

Seems like a good plan
We got to Bol, Brac and fell in love with it. This is our second night and I'm not sure what that does to the ferry times.

Why did we fall in love?

We had no accommodation booked because I had decided to take a chance on one of the 'little old ladies' that sprook rooms in their houses. I liked the idea of trying a different form of accommodation. (yes, given, a hotel WOULD be a different form of accommodation but it's just not interesting......not an adventure). The was a nice portly gentleman that reminded me of my grandfather 'room? Apartment?'. He said it wasn't far and total price was 200kn complete (that's $34 AUD). We said we would look. He walked us to his car (bad sign??) and we loaded our packs in the back. We were now in the hands of a total stranger in a village that we knew nothing about and did not speak the language. I love this. I love the feeling of abandoning myself to fate. It's like shooting craps, or playing blackjack, or spinning the roulette wheel. For the moment in time that the ball is still rolling, all possibilities are live. It's a chance to escape the predictable....the usual. Occasionally students do it......take a leap which is unexpected or connect things in a way that distracts you from the ordinary........surprises you out of the hazy fog that passes for day to day reality.
When we got to Vinco's place ( which was only a 6min walk from the port) we were stunned. We had our own, lovely bathroom, TV, cable channels, vine covered terrace, open area veranda overlooking the water, BBQ area........amazing. And we were the only ones there. The bed was comfortable and Ashley got to lie on the roof top verandah and study the stars. (he now has sorted out Polaris and key stars and planets in the northern sky.) In the morning we were awakened by the soft twittering of birds.

But that's not why we stayed.

In the morning we walked to the beach. Wow! Talk about fantasy! Here was a tiny curved beach with a 6th century church at one end and hills covered with yellow flowers at he other. And the turquoise water of the Adriatic, stunningly clear and impossibly beautiful. How could I leave this? We swam and then walked back to tell Vinco that we would stay another night. Bravo! Bravo! was his response. We then hired bikes and road to Zlatni Rat, the famous beach of Bol. All the beaches are white pebbles (which hurt you feet) but this one is a spit. This means that the white pebbles are surrounded by turquoise water blending into deep blue. Pretty picturesque but does not have the charm of our little beach. We swam here, had lunch sitting on a park bench drinking beer (just because we had classy accommodation doesn't mean that we have class) and then went and swam on another little beach we had seen.

We found a great seafood restaurant that night and feasted on grilled fish and salad. The next day we swam at our secret beach (there were 4 other people there and I resented their presence) and ate on our terrace. I hope the other islands are good because it was difficult to leave Bol, Brac.
