we arrived at our hotel in a small rural town around 10pm and ran into the Frenchies there since we were on the same tour as them. after eating dinner, we chilled and talked outside in the cool air, under the stars and surrounded by huge, green mountains. it was a lovely location. most people went to sleep, since we had to be awake at 330am to leave for our sunrise tour of the volcanoes. i ended up staying awake and chillin with Jerome, one of the Frenchies, talking, learning some French, teaching him English (he speaks pretty well, but isn't fluent), and just hangin out.
at 330am, we got ready for our trip, layering on as much clothing as
possible since the volcano was going to be about 4 degrees Celcius
didn't have a jacket or sneakers, so i threw on a tank, 2 long sleeves,
my thick men's socks that everyone likes to make fun of, trekking
sandals, and the blanket from the hotel. i looked pretty hot, as did
the sunrise at the viewpoint was gorgeous. you could clearly see
this cluster of huge volcanoes, with deep ridges down the sides, and
wide craters spanning across the tops. one of them was sleepily active, with
white smoke seeping out from the depths of the crater. after sunrise, we hopped back on our
jeep and drove down the mountain towards our next destination, Mt.
Bromo. the roads were narrow and rocky tho, and we got a flat tire on
the way down! so we stopped along this vast plain of sandy land between
the mountains to fix the tire
ran around on the plains, skipping, snapping pictures, laughing,
playing, and just having fun. i was kinda disappointed when the tire
was fixed and it was time to go.
Mt. Bromo was super crowded. from the parking lot, you hike up about
30 minutes to the top. i decided to ride a horse up for $2 which turned
out to be a smart idea since nips and the Frenchies were really tired
by the time i met them. we reached the top and looked out at the wide
crater of Mt. Bromo, with white smoke puffing out of the center. we
took some more pix and headed back to the hotel.
we had some time to kill before our bus picked us up at 3pm, so we
ate breakfast, taught the Frenchies how to play gin rummy, showered, and
took a walk around the the farms and dirt roads surrounding our hotel
at 3pm, we loaded our bags on the top of a public bus and headed towards
the travel agency in Probolinggo. the bus was more like a jeep, and
the seats were so close together that there was pretty much no legroom
in the back. we stopped several times to pick up and drop off
passengers, bumping along the dirt roads and spiraling down the
mountain. it started to rain - pretty hard - and we stopped to take our
bags off the top of the bus and somehow smush them all into the leg
space in front of Jerome & i. it was pretty funny, and we rested
our legs on top of the luggage since there was no where else to put
them. the bags kept trying to fall out of the bus every time someone got
on or off, so it was a challenge trying to keep them all on board.
our bus for Denpansar, Bali came early at 530pm (was supposed to be there at 6pm), so we
said our rushed goodbyes to the Frenchies, who were heading to a
different area of Bali. our 10 hour bus ride was an adventure in
itself, which i'll write about later. for now, i'm starving and ready to
hit the Bali beaches! toodles...
