We've been fighting a cough and cold since we arrived, today we succumbed. Alan is blaming the idiot doctor who sat next to him on the flight from Khajuraho to Delhi. The doc kept sniffing and blowing his nose all through the trip and I just KNEW that one of us was going to get it. Thank goodness medication is so cheap and freely avail without prescriptions here. Antibios, which you all know we are rather against taking only cost $1/- per complete course, and because we just want this cough & cold to be over and done, we taking them.
Anyway this doctor, told Alan that both he and his "Mrs" were retired doctors. He had left Calcutta for London when he was 30. After some polite conversation, Alan asked him "What do you think of the term NRI?" (Non Resident Indian) He struggled to find the words to express himself and finally stated that he had made a choice to live his life in the UK but nevertheless was an Indian, returning to visit the land of his birth whenever he could. At this point, I had to lean over and add "I too am NRI yaar, Not Real Indian." to which he simply smiled and wagged his head, I wagged back.
Soon after that I noticed Alan fidgeting in his seat. When I looked, I noticed that the person behind had used the top of Alan's head as a newspaper rest! ahahahahahhh! Alan was moving his head to politely get the person's attention to remove the paper. After some time of this not working, Alan resorted to more direct methods of hinting. He reached up with one hand and without turning, just folded the newspaper over. The person got the message! All sorts, I tell you. Today we met the owner of this lovely 'home' we are staying at. Mrs Singh had a long chat with us as we sipped our morning masala chai. What a nice lady. After that we went out to have brunch. Paper thin masala dosas ... they were out of this world! We both feel that in our 45 years we have never experienced as beautiful dosas! They were too big for even Alan to finish! Keiron and Mabel, can you imagine 'Gimme, gimme gimme' Alan leaving Indian food unfinished? And each only cost $2/- which included all the sauces and sambars and a to die for tomato chutney ... I loved it so much the waiter brought us 2 more lots! ahahahahah. Cannot imagine how they made it. I think we must go back again tomorrow and try to find out. And the gravy was like a rasam thickened with I'm guessing a smooth dhal. I wanted to pick up the bowl and drink it! ahahahahahahaah (Nads are you going yummmmmm!??)
Going to have an arvo nap now. Serene - I was very unsettled yesterday ... I did not see a single billboard or poster ad with Shah Rukh. It was weird! But when we got back - there he was on the TV advertising for Dish TV. *sigh* okay my day was complete.
