Everywhere in India when new people arrive, the local shopkeepers and auto-rickshaw drivers swam around them with enticements of every kind of goods and services imaginable.
It can be confusing and even overwhelming if you are not prepared for it.
After a day, one normally sorts out those just looking for a quick buck from those genuinely interested in you and your stories. We were fortunate enough to find many such genuine people in Khajuraho. We shared chai, laughs and swapped experiences.
So much so, we actually had almost a 'family gathering' at the front of our little hotel to see us off. It was a bitter-sweet moment.
For the grand sum of A$28/- a night (yes, so cheap) the Hotel Surya went beyond our expectations in their hospitality and friendliness. The beds were hard and the bugs kept coming back every evening - yet we will miss the gentleness of the overall package as we move on.
