Last day in New Zealand
Entry 40 of 41 | show all | print this entry |
Well, this is it - holiday almost over and what a great journey it has been.
Last night was a wild night with the howling winds and the crashing waves from Lake Taupo, but we were as snug as a bug in a rug. It wasn't raining this morning when we awoke, but nevertheless very cold indeed. Had a great breakfast - no need to skimp even though in a motorhome - with fruit compote, ham, eggs and toast with a really hot cup of tea. Well, we have to use up what we have before delivering back the motorhome!
Going through Taupo again, heading north, we stopped off for a cup of hot chokkie from McDonalds and then got on our way towards Auckland. Lunch was beside the Waikato river - a huge river - very pretty.
We did an easy drive through Hamilton which we noticed was a large town with lovely gardens around houses and also found our way to Candyland where we went a little crazy on the lollies. Yuuumy. Well worth a visit for anyone who has a sweet tooth!
Before leaving New Zealand, we had promised ourselves the famous fish and chips so found ourselves a fish and chip shop and set ourselves up at a local scenic spot overlooking the airport. Obviously set up for aircraft crazy people to come and watch flights land and take off though we thought it rather strange given security issues. Nevertheless, we spent some time doing what the local do - watch planes and eat fish and chips!
Handover of the vehicle is at 0600 in the morning so rather than battle traffic and navigate our way through early morning peak hour traffic, we decided to camp right outside the Affordable Homes depot. Rather weird sleeping in the industrial area but what the heck - at least we will be on time.
