Crescent City, California
Entry 33 of 41 | show all | print this entry |
Back into California and this is the last time we cross a state line until next time. We are making our way back down the coast to San Francisco and flying out tomorrow for a final week in New Zealand.
The coast has not been what we expected. From the brochures we have read, we had this vision of making our way down a coastline with the view of the sea at all times. Not so. You have to take turnoffs to get the views so in the at regard we were a little disappointed. Until we got to Brooking I think it was and from there we have been hugging the coastline with a good view.
Arrived in Crescent City mid afternoon so decided to hang our hat here and get ourselves up to the Redwoods. Wow again. Just like the Sequoias - well they are a species of Sequoia apparently - these trees just take your breath away. The Grand Sequoias we saw at the beginning of our trip are the WIDEST in the world and that species is known for its girth. These Redwoods however are the TALLEST in the world and they are known for the height they grow to. Also hundreds and hundreds of years old, walking in the groves takes your breath away and you feel like you are in the presence of something great. It leaves you with the feeling that you want to be involved in protecting something like this. How could people ever think of cutting down something as beautiful as this. We will be heading out through the forest, hugging the coastline, a fair distance towards San Francisco where we need to be tomorrow night, staying at the Grand Hyatt in Union Square. Well, we might as well go out with a huge splash.
If I get time to update before leaving San Francisco, will do so, otherwise next entry may be from New Zealand - if we have access to internet. Otherwise, see everyone on our return.
