Florence, Oregon
Entry 32 of 41 | show all | print this entry |
We headed on over to Florence, on the coast of Oregon, because we had heard about the wild coast of Oregon being so fantastic and, we wanted to see something more than just the mountains. What a trip over here. We went through this great place called Sisters, thinking that it would be a small hick of a town. Far from it. They had made this town to look like the days of the old west - well sorta - fascades for the shop fronts of course but he walkways were boardwalks. Actually, come to think of it, maybe that was because of the cold and the snow! Everywhere you go it seems to say "Cold and snot - lots of it!" A real tourist trap - lots and lots of gimmicky things for sale at a price only a tourist would be nuts to pay! FORTUNATELY, we are wise to that trap and kept our wallets tightly closed!
From there we made our way over the McKenzie Pass. Spectacular to say the least. Again, Fall colours in their best show and another spot that was weird, a HUGE expanse of lava flow in the middle of which, there was an observatory where you could stop and take a sticky beek.
Oh yeah, almost forgot - before heading out of Bend this morning - we took ourselves off on this most spectacular hike. It is 1l miles long - though because of time we were unable to do the full length but we did manage to put behind us some miles - but the hike follows the Desutches River. Again with the fall colours and the river alongside, we were sorry that we had not more time. We were very much reminded of Jacq who would have really enjoyed this one. It was awesome and so relaxing too. Also, before leaving Bend, we went up to Mt Washington which was covered in snow and would you believe, stacks of people up there already getting into the snow. We didn't think there was enough snow to be snowboarding and of course, the lifts are not yet open, but keen as chips they were they were walking up and boarding down! Ya gotta be keen!
Ok over the pass and down to Florence and would you believe - raining! Darn!
Not quite what we were expecting, but good to smell the sea for a change
