Well we are here - at long last and at the beginning of our trip. We flew Air New Zealand and, much to our surprise, it was such a fantastic flight. The last time we did the States, we flew back Air New Zealand but were so uncomfortable, the seats being so very small. Hey, but wait a minute, as Jude has suggested - I have lost weight so perhaps the seats are the same size but now my butt can fit properly in them! Whatever - it was a great flight with entertainment non stop on the back of each seat, so you could choose whatever you wanted to watch or game you wanted to play. It was truly fabulous.
Arrived on time in San Fran and made our way to the hotel which was right on the Embacardero directly opposite San Francisco Bay. Also, being next to Fisherman's Wharf it meant that we did not have to go very far to start our explorations.
We used the afternoon mostly to clear out the cobwebs which are always there after a long flight and something we noticed were the amount of people involved in some form of exercise. Actually, unlike Los Angeles where we saw many people way overweight, this is different - people generally speaking look really fit. We have guessed that one of the reasons might be is because of all the steep hills in San Fran that you HAVE to be fit just to get around!
So OK, Fisherman's Wharf was fun and we managed to get our bearings. One of the most interesting things we saw down at the wharf was Pier 39. Apparently some years ago the sea lions started arriving and plonking themselves on the pier.
They tried to get rid of them but eventually the fishermen decided that it was too hard to try and get rid of them so they moved out and handed the Pier over to the sea lions! What a racket and of course, what a smell!.
Tomorrow we plan on catching a ride on the tram and as well, we have a visit to Alcatraz booked. Also, we are going to do a city tour to get a better idea of San Fran.
