We cannot believe what we have just been through. Travelling from North Dakota - which was as boring as you know what, we had hoped that on crossing the State Line we would at least have a change in scenery. Not bl...dy likely! The Prairies of North and South Dakota are as boring and as endless as ever! Every turn of the road that appeared every 100 miles or so, we thought might reveal a change in scenery but as we took the turn, oh my goodness, it was like being in Alaska except instead of seeing pine tree after pine tree, it was blade of grass after blade of grass. At one stage, we even contemplated stopping the car and running onto the side of the road to roll the rolls of hay that were there - just for fun! What a disaster! Our legs felt like they wanted to jump outside the car by themselves because our bums were totally welded into the shape of the car seats. It was terrible! Never are we coming back to Dakota!
We stopped off along the way at Theodore Roosevelt National Park - just a wee digression but it turned out to be really worthwhile. It was a change in the painstakingly boring scenery we had encountered all day and as well, the town near the National Park - Medora - was cute and well worth visiting. There is a really short circular loop that you drive through in the parki - only 36 miles in length - with various interesting viewpoints along the way. Spent a little time in the National Park looking at the scenery and as well, had some fun watching the little communities of prairie dogs. Also saw some Bison and wild horses.
Of course we eventually made it to Rapid City and then we were confronted with another challenge. Every place was fully booked up! Of course it would be - it is the height of the tourist season after all! Finally though we managed to secure a room in the Rodeway Inn - what a dump! But hey, we were inside and not in the car with the mozzies! Well below our usual standard but as I said, we had a bed.
