Daylight revealed the riverside city as clean, quiet, orderly, quite modern, English widely spoken and with air you're happy to breathe - certainly not the jungle village I had anticipated. I felt I was in a slice of heaven compared to the chaos of Indonesia. They even have traffic lights here, and drivers actually stop when they're red! and many of the bars were packed at night! (something I hadn't experienced since Darwin!) We found a café which makes great coffee, and the Laksa is terrific by the river. The people do not hassle you, they are very polite and appear happy and stress-free. All very civilized...!
Headed off to nearby Bako National Park for a night where we took a few strolls through the steaming jungle, though most of the wildlife was around the main camp such as the Bearded Borneo Pig and the rare Proboscis Monkey. I had my first (as far as I know) taste of stingray here, I was hungry...
Back to Kuching for a final night, and final Sarawak Laksa (my 3rd) at the James Brookes (adjacent to the finest public toilet I have ever visited!) while overlooking the river lights, before heading off into the real jungles of Borneo...
