Arriving at the end of Jakarta's month long 478th birthday celebrations, Jon & I had 4 days to kill amongst the smog & traffic, more than enough time. Recent events, including the suicide bombing last month in Suliwasi have had a blatant effect on the tourism here as much as anywhere I've been in the country (except perhaps Kuta, Bali). The security at hotels, shopping centres and even Starbucks is strickter than anything I experienced in South America, though it still would not be difficult to bypass if you were motivated. One place I do wish they'd bomb is the mosque next to our hotel which blares out prayer calls every morning at 5am! Talk about noise pollution!

We took a cab out to Kota, the old part of the city, which we agreed is a shithole, so we spent time wandering through the nice clean, modern air-conditioned shopping plazas, watched some movies, went to the top of the National Monument (known here as Soeharto's Last Erection) and even to a museum for a few hours!

One highlight was strutting my dirty shorts, thongs and singlet in real style at the very suave & expensive f bar (fashion tv bar!). Unfortunately my current travel commitments prevented me from accepting their very lucrative modeling contract... so it was off to the Irish Pub for a Kilkenny, the first since leaving Aus.

It's been a full month in Indo, and we've traveled quite quickly (with the exception of being laid up sick in Bali), but there's still plenty more to explore; Sumatra, Silawasi, Kallimantan, Papua....

One day, but not today.
