Back on the 900m long Ghan the Crazy Canadians and I played cards & dice to kill some of the 24 hour journey to Darwin. Fortunately there was a 4 hour break in the trip at Katherine where I opted for a boat tour along the Gorge. Nice, but not spectacular when compared to other sites.
Taking the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin was something that I had on my "To Do" list for several years, but despite devouring The Da Vinci Code, I'm glad it was not a return trip!
I found Darwin a relaxed, clean, sunny tourist city, with a lot more than I anticipated. The sunsets at Mindil Beach are spectacular, especially with a meal of Road Kill from night markets there. Free dinner vouchers for the world famous Vic hotel always brought a rowdy crowd in, despite continually playing the worst of the 80's music.
I took the opportunity to dive a US Navy transporter ship sunk in the harbour during WWII, which, while interesting, the mere 2-3m visibility (normal for Darwin) made for hard work - give me the Barrier Reef or the Caribbean any day!
Darwin airport may not be much, but in terms of quick, smooth customs and security checks, I love it! So, after what I think will be my last Boags for a while, it's good-bye to Aus.
