Choosing to ignore the Australian government´s recent warning against travel to southern regions of Venezuela, I, along with 2 Italians (David & Amando), 8 Spaniards and 1 other Aussie (Scot, the Grampians) jumped a van and headed for the Venezuelan Plains (Llanos).

Stopping long enough to try a herbal tea liquor concoction and take some snaps of yet ABC, this one a little interesting as it was made comlpetely of stone, we reached the town of Barinas. Here, while refueling, I came to understand why there are so many wrecks (cars) in Venezuela - fuel is $A0.02 a litre! (Even cheaper for diesel). So, even most of the poor (80% of the population) are able to afford fuel here, all they need is a vehicle - anything at all, so long as it has wheels!

Unfortunately, not even our grand tour company puts some of their fuel savings towards maintenance, as when our starter motor died. So, with little else to do while the repairs were being carried out, we all got to know ech other over a 6kg bag of ice, some Pepsi Light and a few bottles of local rum! Once back on the road, Pedro, our guide, added to our cheer with some locally produced cigarettes...after which I spent 30 mins explaining (in Spanish) an important 5 word Hebrew phrase to David the Italian!....it didn`t matter that we arrived at out campsite in the dark.

The following 2 days were spent seaching for various reptiles, river dolphins, fishing piranha, horse riding and enjoying the sunsets. Pedro also introduced us to another fuel Gasoline de Avion which certainly lived up to its name!

Another first for me here was a 5.30am start! when leaving for San Fernado. However, it did enable me to see a terrific sunrise (a little clearer than the others I`ve seen when returning home...) while riding in the back of a ute to the bus station.
