A gorgeous village perched on the side of the Swiss Alps almost a mile above sea level. It took about an hour to get here from Interlaken and we had to take a train, bus and a gondola to get there. Check the pics for a sense of the amaying scenery.
One story I have to tell about Gimmelwald. We had just arrived and I was standing out on the patio taking in the view in silence. I was thinking about how gorgeous and amazing it all is when BOOM! A HUGE explosion or something from my left. My first thought was a cannon shot from nearby, but why would anyone be shooting a cannon. Next thought, dynamite to carve the cliff sides. I looked up at the snow capped peaks to check for avalanches. Nothing. A gun shot? Too loud for a gun. The sound echoed from the left through the valley and ricocheted off the Alps into the distance. I looked up over my head to see the vapor trails often left by airplanes and me and some other travelers, after talking to the locals, figured it was a sonic boom from one of the Swiss Air Force planes that had flown overhead.
A unique experience in a unique place. More thumbnails ...
