This is mostly because of the inconsistency of Indian Railway. They do their best I'd imagine but they move over 12 million people each day in India so naturally they are going to run into some delays. I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt here. Our train left Varanasi 5 hours late, but we amused ourselves for the 5 hours by waiting for the random power outages and then scrambling to protect our luggage in the pitch black. This is a fun game which I enjoyed. Anyways, eventually we got on the train at 10:30 at night, only to be greeted by the loudest snoring individual I'd ever heard. After finally tuning him out after a couple of hours and falling to sleep, two more Indian guys sharing our compartment of 8 people get on the train at some random stop at 2:30 in the morning
I am amused but bewildered and annoyed at the same time. How could one human being create so much noise. It was like standing beside a jet engine that was starting and stopping. I'm still trying to figure it out. Ahh, the mysteries of India.
All snoring aside, we did make it to Kolkata, and I did get approximately one hour of sleep. Settled into the hotel and chilled out for a few hours before getting ready to go for dinner. Dinner was at a restaurant called Bar B Q. Sounds pretty classy, I know, but beyond my sarcasm it was actually a really excellent restaurant. It had 3 different dining rooms all serving different types of cuisine, and the food was amazing. I had a nice chicken meal with naan as my last dinner in India and thoroughly enjoyed it. We walked back along the crazy streets of Kolkata, sidestepping taxis and street vendors. It's a busy city and I enjoyed the walk back at night.
At the hotel I said my goodbyes to my travel group and then after a good sleep I left for the airport next morning.
Back to Thailand, of course!
