We all slept late (including Denise and Bettina). Breakfast was a very good coffee cake, local apple juice, tea for Carol, and water from the local fountain (from a spring). Other days we had croissants, rolls, or just the wonderful French bread with honey or preserves. A light breakfast was in order since when Daniel was home we had our big meal at about 1:00 p.m. when he got home from work. Supper was then a light repast (still of multiple courses).
Today is Daniel's birthday. We bought him a bottle of eau de vie framboise (raspberry aquavit-after dinner drink) at the local wine shop. He was very pleased with it. While we were there, I bought a bottle of Alsatian Riesling wine and bottle of beer for Steve and Carol bought a bottle of red wine.
Denise took Bettina to the doctor in Strasbourg but made lunch before she left. It was a casserole called baeckeoffe (baker's oven), made of pork cubes, sliced potatoes, leeks and onions, carrots, and sealed with dough and baked. It used to be sent to be cooked at the local bakery which is how it got its name. It was wonderful, as was all of Denise's cooking.
Daniel took us all around Lembach looking for a good view of the town. We also saw many of Daniel's tiny properties. He has about eight different properties around Lembach and a few others elsewhere and Denise has a few, too. Most are rented to others for grazing horses or making hay. One has apple trees on it but they are small still and don't produce apples. We saw some beautiful horses and ponies that belong to the local dentist, who is a dentist to support his horse business. For dinner we had lasagna and salad and Bettina's birthday cake-a bombe au chocolat (chocolate with mousse and frosting).
