As my time in Florence comes to an end, I am frantically trying to see/buy everything I have not yet seen, or bought, or eaten for that matter. Simultaneously I also have finals, but those are pretty low on my priority list... So it's fun, but mostly really scary...
For Friday all my friends from my apartment had signed up to participate in an olive harvest. It has been pouring rain the last few weeks, so we were all geared up for a good old muddy time. Once we got there, though, it started raining again so the harvest was cancelled. We still, however, received the lunch that came with it. We got ribollita (a tuscan soup made with beans, bread, and olive oil that is my favorite thing ever) and sausages cooked on olive wood, which had a really interesting flavor
On Saturday, the plan was to finally go see the Duomo!! First, we climbed it. That was rough. Real rough. The view was so pretty though, and we finally got a clear day! I could see all of Florence, and the city looked so small from up above! Once we made it down, we actually went into the Cathedral. It was surprising how simple the inside was. It seems like they spend so much time and money on the outside that they couldn't be bothered about the inside. After that, we went to the Duomo museum. For the most part it wasn't too interesting, but they had Ghiberti's gold doors to the baptistry. Most people don't know that the ones on the baptistry now are fake, but we saw the real ones! They are in a special area with special clean air, it's pretty high tech for Italy.
On Monday, one of my classes got cancelled so I decided to go see the Palazzo Vecchio. The Palazzo Vecchio was the residence of Cosimo Medici and his wife Elenora. He loved her lots and lots, so he had half the palace built basically just for her. The entire thing was super colorful, and had frescos everywhere.
Stay tuned for next weeks post, my last post ever!!! :( You will hear all about the talk I am going to held by Obama's chief campaign manager, as well as my other various frantic adventures in Florence!
