Ahhh 26 degrees, beautiful skies and I am sitting in an internet cafe??? Hmmm Anyway the purpose is to gloat that I got my photos developed today and WOW (yes the whole 400+) of them. Because I am a computer geek I also got them cut to CD (more for saftey). So I have tried to include a couple of them to wet your appettite! Enjoy
As for me; headed across to Robben Island yesterday with some other people from the hostel. Have to admit I went there with no pre conceptions and came back from there pretty moved and educated about appartheid.. Robben Island was used as a prison and Mental house for criminals - at the same time the political leaders and members of the ANC were also jailed and were brutially beaten by the Afrikaan prison guards. The prison was closed in 1991 and is now under World Heritage Listing.
Even though the tour was very touristy, we had a 45 min bus ride around the island which highlighted certain areas - but the highlight for me was the talk given by one of the Ex Prison Inmates from the ANC. Some the stories are shocking and I would like to quickly share his story with you.
WARNING: Some of the following text my not be so nice. blah blah
This inmate was jailed for 18 years after blowing up a Sth African Gov't building in the 70's as instructed from the ANC. Now noone (including him) is denying he should have been jailed and he was - excepted but the brutality this man received is unspeakable - on a number of times he woulld be intergrated by being cuffed and gagged and electric shock - but the story which made me sick was when one of the guards let loose his prision dogs who ran and attacked the cuffed man and bit into his genital area -in pain and bleeding the guard then came over and stripped the man naked and closely looked at the damage the dog had done (part of his penis had been ripped off). The guard then casually laughed and extinguished his lit cigratte on the mans testicle. Now the reaction you have is probably the same as I did - but all in all the man is one of nicest giants I have ever met!
The rest of the tour took you through where Nelson Mandella was jailed and the conditions they lived in. If anyone out there ever visits Capetown I cannot recommend this trip more than words can describe!
Looking at hiring a car and heading out towards the winery region tomorrow (guess which little black duck will not be driving) with a number of people I have meet. So until enjoy and will chat soon!!!
Editors Note: I have been advised by a certain party that in my last journal I did mistake my comments about the CAPE OF GOOD HOPE! When I mentioned seeing the Atlantic and Indian oceans I got them around the wrong way. Thank you for your understanding!
