Good Morning All from Maun - the supply town to the Okavanka Delta (Botswana). It is about 9am here and some of the group have headed over to the airport for a scenic flight over the Delta. The Delta comprises of the Okavanka River flowing south and breaking out into thousands of smaller rivers across the plains and then drying out in the dessert sun - pretty amazing site.
We are camped here for a night and then we have a 4 hour drive where we will board some speedboats, then dug out canoes and boat across to one of the islands and sleep in the complete open - no fences and boundaries to keep Mr and Mrs Lion from ripping my tent apart
Now being in the remote world of Africa you would assume I would be eating different foods but last night enjoyed the old Chicken and Chips from one of the restaurants. Kinda weird huh! But so far have eaten Warthog, Ostrich, Boar, Buffalo - just having some problems catching that cheetah!
We spent about 8 hours yesterday driving in the truck. Let me give you a quick explanation of what this -truck is-. It is a self sufficient beast of camping, 800 litre petrol tank, 750 Horsepower 4WD, 22 seats, and battery powered esky to keep beers nice and cool and all the storage you need for tables and chairs and tents, food, water etc etc. It would be so good to head around Australia on one of these babies! In the 8 hour drive have learnt to play heaps of new card games and the time I spent recording songs onto my minidisk are a lifesaver - can get my kick on Midnight Oil or Led Zepplin when I need it.
We have been assigned jobs on the truck and my job is to get on top of the truck (18foot) and get all the roof gear off - cannot complain about that job - best views going around
I have been tagged with the nickname of Kevin - the group believes I look like Kevin Spacey - at the same time Jim and Sam (leader) are brothers and one looks like Edward Norton and the other Ewan McGregor - so we have a big old Hollywood bus traveling south down Africa.
Spent 2 nights in Chobe National park a couple of days ago - went for a 6am game drive, now this is the time I should have brought my safari outfit and pith helmet. We did not see too much but that night went on a cruise through the shallow waters and swamps and saw most amazing animals - Elephants, Hippos, Water Buffalos, Impala, Warthog, Lizards, Massive Crocodiles and the sunset..... well I have been to the place where postcards are made from!
My camera is getting a good old work out and will defiantly send the film home for storage and development as I can afford to loose the pictures.
Gotta go this is costing me heaps (beer is cheap - internet is dear - work that out). Would love to hear from anyone reading this and give me the goss from Downunder Until next time - catchya
