Amongst the many things needed for any trip overseas is, of course, the mighty dollar. Or, in this case, the mighty euro and the mighty pound.
We gave some "pocket change" (yeah, right) to Viv's dad last week and he graciously had it exchanged and returned it to us this afternoon, to the penny of course (General Jimmy does watch his nickels and dimes).
In addition to the well-known fact that money in Ireland and the UK is basically double the cost of what it is here, one thing I'm not fond of already is the money is also BIGGER. Size-wise, I can't hardly fit it in my wallet!
I know, I know...small gripe for a fun upcoming trip.
Tonight, I took a break from everything (since Viv banned me from the house to host a church Circle meeting) and went on a "date" with Elizabeth Hall, more affectionately known as Riz. For those of you who don't know Riz (who will be reading this), she is my 18-year-old pal/pseudo-girlfriend/goddaughter/tennis partner. We went bowling (yes, I dominated both games), ate at Huddle House, and went to see the movie What Happens in Vegas (and, as you know, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas). Later, we returned back to our house (meeting her parents, Dan and Amy, who had been at Wal-Mart for two hours doing Lord knows what) to finish off the fondue Vivian had prepared for her Circle meeting.
Riz recently played a more important role in our upcoming trip, however. About a month ago, she took great pride in teaching me how to drive a stick shift in her family's bright yellow Mini Cooper, which we eventually borrowed for about two weeks for practice. This is all important because the rental cars we will have overseas are all stick shifts (automatics are MUCH more expensive there). I feel I've gained a decent command of a manual transmission over the past few weeks. Of course, it'll all have to been done left-handed, on the wrong side of the car, and on the wrong side of the freakin' road over there!
