Now, Mont St. Michel is not a castle, its an abbey. Surrounding the abbey are small shops on a continuous incline toward St. Michel. It's completely a tourist area-- thats a given. The shops were expensive and full of post cards, shirts, magnets (even some samurai swords ---??-- James and I were sure to check those out)
However, the ascension up the small mount wasn't too long. A lot of stairs and a lot of tourists. Our group alone was probably 150 deep and the streets were pretty narrow, so it slowed us down a bit. So, touristy, yes. Overrated, no, I'd say not.
It's quite jaw-dropping. When you get off the bus, you just look up and you are utterly shocked at what you are seeing. It's most beautiful I think from the base since it is just so intense. That's not to say that the abbey itself wasn't beautiful, as it was, but my favorite view was from the bottom of the castle. Ashley and I couldn't help but hum the Harry Potter tune to ourselves (which, in turn made someone walking next to us tell us that we got it stuck in her head before she marched off seemingly annoyed. Ah well.
Anyway, we finally got to the top of the abbey and we got to then walk around in the abbey. The view was great from the top and the whole process took around 2-3 hours
Overall the trip was a great time. I was exhausted by the end of the day from the sheer amount of driving around in buses that we did, but afterward I came back home and got to upload pictures and talk to my family and friends about what we did that day. I apologize that these blogs are so bland and not as interesting (I think ) as the Ireland ones. I haven't really been learning as much useful random information that would be prudent to you (unless you know the french language). However, when I do learn some more, you readers will be the first to hear them. On another note, we are going to go see Chateaux of the Loire Valley this weekend, so expect another blog and more pictures!!
