Athens, Greece

Things We Did:

Caught a shuttle from the Port of Piraeus into the center of Athens

Walked around the Acropolis and Areopagus Hill area, but the tourist crowds were thick and maddening

We found a quiet spot in a nearby wooded area and hung out to catch our wind

Walked downhill from the Acropolis to the Plaka District where we did some souvenir shopping

Mei and I did some scouting and found a tiny restaurant up on a hill, tucked away on a side street directly beneath the walls of the Acropolis

Food We Ate:

Moussaka- Layers of aubergine, mince and eggplant topped with béchamel sauce and baked

Souvlaki- Grilled meat (lamb or chicken), kebab style

Moschari/Stifado- Oven baked or stewed meat, veal and potatoes

Baklava- Thin layers of pastry filled with honey and nuts

More Greek coffee

People We Met:

Dmitri- An Australian born Greek artist married to a talented potter. They both own a shop/art gallery where they sell hand made crafts. In the back, she works on her latest projects, while he entertains the guests with stories of each art piece, and some interesting cultural tidbits. It was refreshing to discover a shop with quality handmade products, a welcome respite from the same old same old souvenir stores which infest the Plaka District.

David- A young man from Portugal. One of the F&B supervisors. He spent an hour playing bar games with me, Camille and Sucheep. When I told him I was part Portugese, he rightfully guessed it was from one of my grandfathers. He asked us why we spoke perfect American English but looked nothing like your typical American, so we told him we were from Hawai'i and that, as shameful as it was to admit to a European, Hawai'i really is a part of America.

LeeAnn- A Canadian woman working at the front desk. She talked to us about the "politics" and hierarchy of crew positions, from the spa workers and shopkeepers who have flexible contracts and low hours, to the Filipino engineers who never come out to see the light of day.

The Li-Girls (Lina, Lita, Lisa and Mom)- Three sisters traveling with their mom. All of them with fiery, spunky personalities. Apparently they were raised in Guam, although one or two of them now live in California. During dinner, they sent us over a bottle of champagne to start off with, followed by an Italian white.

Little Wigs- An interesting bloke from Sussex. My chemistry with him varied night to night, ranging from wanting to kick the living daylights out of him for disrespecting my boy A.J., to taking turns buying each other a round of drinks. Whether he was a drug pusher or a spoiled little rich brat, I never found out for sure.

Jason a.k.a. Vanilla Ice- The xtc pushing redneck. Little Wigs' right butt-cheek.
