Firstly we went up La Popa Hill. This gave us a wonderful view of the city and surrounding areas. The Convent of De La Popa is perched on the top of the hill. The convent had a beautiful Spanish style court yard with flowering Borganvillia and palms making it a lovely haven from the heat. From here we drove around the city and residential areas looking at all the different architecture, mansions and local sites.
On to the San Felipe Fortress, then into the old town, housed inside the old city walls. Within these walls the old Colonial city is an architectural treasure. Everywhere you look, 300 year old colonial balconies and mansions speak of a homesick people longing for their homeland (Cartagena Spain). We wandered the labyrinth of streets in awe, and took too many pictures. Off then to a shopping mall to view the famous Emeralds of the area, and buy the obligatory souvenirs. A great day with lots to see. Could have stayed for a week here.
