We landed in Dakar at 2:30am and were met by a friend of a Thunderbird graduate (whom I've never met but was gracious enough to put me in contact with an employee of the American embassy to help us out upon arrival). This arrangement allowed us to avoid the immediate haggling by prospective porters and taxi drivers waiting outside the airport. It wasn't long before we were at the hotel, in our room, and figuring out how to crank up the air conditioning.
