So far we haven’t moved out of Perth – well only as far as Fremantle. Perth is BIG! Apparently it’s 90K (north to south) by 40K (east to west) and seems to consist primarily of suburbs – a deliberate plan based on the Garden City movement back in the UK. Unfortunately it’s all getting a bit out of
hand now – migration into Western Australia is running at about 1500 people a week and we were told that 1000 of those are coming to Perth. I was reading in the paper that there are plans afoot to start building upwards – at the moment there is very little high-rise and that is in the CBD.
One of those – in fact the tallest building in Perth called Central Park – we went up as a perk for buying our van from an Australian (ex London) guy who worked in the building
Our van? Well, despite lots of ideas about having something different – a 4x4 perhaps, or even
a caravan – we have ended up with almost a carbon copy of our last year’s model – Lottie. It’s a bit older but has done less mileage and it’s a long wheel base (every inch counts!). The biggest difference is that it didn’t come fully equipped as Lottie did so we have had a very busy
shopping spree. Spotlight (think DunElm) and Kmart (Tesco superstore, minus the food) are our new friends. So a good start with lots of lovely clean, new equipment. Slight downside is that it’s a diesel and diesel is more expensive here – as in UK. Biggest downside is no power
steering :>( John keeps telling me that I drove cars without for years and I’ll soon get used to it………………….. watch this space – I haven’t driven it yet (John usually does most of the city driving anyway)
We have alternated between a campsite in Perth (called Central, but it isn’t really – it’s a 20 minute bus ride out of the CBD) and Freemantle (which we love)
(was Jones) from Minehead (great seeing her well and happy and looking forward to her Mum arriving).
We are looking forward to going whale watching and then leaving Perth to go north and doing
some travelling and exploring away from the cities – that’s what we’ve come for!
