Who would guess it would be so complicated to buy a
campervan in Darwin? Well it was! We dithered quite a lot between getting a
campervan or a 4x4 and a tent. We didn’t have much choice of vans – at least not ones we fancied living in – and 4x4s were ten a penny and tents and camping gear easy to come by. But the van won out in the end. Why? To live the dream! And we didn’t want to beat around the bush!! (John’s joke!)
Anyway, finding the van turned out to be easy as we came
across a Swiss couple selling theirs and it seemed to be a good ‘un
America via Bali. It was clean and tidy with ‘history’. That was the easy bit – then came the bureaucracy………………. This ended with John having a Northern Territories’ driving license (which he didn’t really want), new plates on the van and lots and lots of paperwork! Finally
we got all the ducks in a row. Now it’s ours :>) Ooer!!!!
So – we are on the road after a week in Darwin. We liked Darwin – it was rather old fashioned
in many ways. Not really a city. Quite proud of it’s few old buildings which
had escaped the bombing and the cyclones (especially Tracy in the 70’s). Nearly
everyone we met was friendly and helpful – and we met a lot in their official capacities!
The van is ‘cosy’. (yes, that means tiny) It took us a day to take everything out – and there was a lot of stuff that they had left for us – sort out what we wanted and didn’t want – then find somewhere to put everything. Amazingly we found a place for it all.
So now we are at Mary River, on the way to Kakadu National Park. The timing seems good – the crowds seem to have gone and, although it’s warming up quite a bit, the weather is wonderful. The lady next door said it was 32° here and 36° in Kakadu.
Hopefully the crocs are sleepy………………….
