Today we visited Kutna Hora, home to surely one of the creepiest but fascinating sights you can find, the Selec Ossuary. Essentially it is a church built on a cemetery and decorated with the bones of 40,000 people. When we say decorated we mean that...bones as chandeliers, bones as chalices, bones even assembled to make up a giant regional coat of arms.
The rough story is that there were quite a lot of bodies buried there during the plague and the Hussite war and at some point a half blind monk was forced to stack up the bones to make room for more. Eventually someone had the kooky idea that the bones could be used for ornamental purposes.
Anyway, her๋'s some photos. It was an amazing, disturbing place.
