Dubbers. Since this is a semi-permanent home for us, it's probably silly to treat it like a travel destination and write up everything we do here. But a brief review of our first couple of weeks won't hurt. After this we'll probably add entries to this post every once in a while, and when we go touring out of Dublin we'll write up a new entry for those places. The first couple of days in town were a mixed bag. It was lovely to walk the streets and have our first couple of pints (particularly those in our favourite pub, and supposedly one of Ireland's finest, the Stag's Head) but we were desperate to get set up and escape the hostel scene. After two nights in the very grotty Rainbow Hostel near O'Connell Street and three nights in the much nicer (except for the bloke who urinated on the floor in the middle of the night) Oliver St John Gogarty's in Temple Bar, we found a place to live. It had been depressing, frustrating and maddening trying to find a nice place that would accept a couple. Places were either hovels or inhabited by Irish versions of Little Britain's Vicky Pollard, so when we were shown a cute, furnished place to share with a nice Polish/German couple, we were thrilled and gladly moved in. We're living in a suburb called Rathfarnham. It is just how we'd imagined and hoped Dublin would be... cute rows of houses that look the same, a really great pub, old churches and it even has it's own castle, which we plan to check out soon. The commute into town isn't too bad. It's about 30 minutes on a good day, and an hour and a bit at its absolute worst. We think the travel time is worth it to live in such a quiet, safe and picturesque place. I've made some gentle enquiries about sub-editing work here, and while everyone asked me to send in my CV there doesn't seem too much about right now. So for the time-being I'm working as a temp office assistant and have been pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying it. It is almost zero stress work and the hours are 9-5. The first week in the legal department of a $5 billion property developing company was really great. The work was easy administrative stuff, but it was interesting and satisfying to do the job well. This week has been at the Law Society of Ireland. The money is better, but there is almost nothing to do...in fact I'm writing this entry at work. Hopefully something a little more challenging comes up soon. Shaz had a two and a half day waitressing career last week. The restaurant in Temple Bar was nice, but the boss was an utter prick. He was rude and abusive to his staff, which led to a mass walk out on Shaz's third night. I'm very proud to say she told him where he could stick his job, with a bit of colourful Aussie language thrown in for good measure. Like me Shaz is now temping. The situation for the time being is great, because we can meet after work and travel home together, or have dinner and a pint in city...which is the exact plan for tonight. The hours also give us the freedom to get away on the weekends and explore this little country, which we plan to do often. To wrap this entry up we are pleased to report that we are having a wonderful time over here and it's sure to get even better as we make friends and get to know the place better. Dublin is beautiful, if a little rougher around the edges than we'd imagined. We've found a fantastic old pub in the city that we've frequented in the first few days and Shaz has discovered a love of Guinness. It's true what they say that it tastes a lot better over here. We love hearing from people back home, so if you've got this far reading, drop us an email and say G'day.
