01 Maori Church Gate

Today's drive is around the East Cape Peninsula. Not

as many ocean views as we would have liked, but we do see thousands of sheep in

pastures and on the hills. The Maori Church at Tikitiki is open for visitors,

so we get to see this unique type of church close-up. The interior is highly

decorated with Maori woodcarvings and patterned walls. Just before sunset we

pull into our Waikawa Bed and Breakfast for the night. We enjoy a lovely sunset

over the waters of the Bay of Plenty while drinking wine with a couple from

Canada who are also staying here. The owners, Shirley and Russ, spoil us with

their hospitality, including giving us a sample of the local smoked fish.
