Tuesday, February 13 Wellington
There is a great morning view of Wellington from the Mt Victoria Lookout. All of the houses, both historic and modern, climb up the hills, perched on the cliffs. Each affords fantastic views, but we wonder about the wisdom of building such houses when there are 4 earthquake faults running through Wellington! The government buildings are built only 1300 ft from one of the fault lines. During a tour of the Parliament Buildings, built in 1899 and 1918, we learn that the buildings have recently been strengthened for earthquake protection. The newer, modern Beehive, built in 1977, now houses the executive offices. Other sites of the city are the large, modern Cathedral of St Paul, quite a contrast to the small, intimate 1866 Old St Pauls Church which was built entirely of wood. The city's popular cable car takes us up one of the many city hills to the Botanic Garden. From here it is a leisurely walk through the garden back down the hill to the city.
