Namibia Day 1
Entry 1 of 18 | show all | print this entry |
After all the months of waiting we were finally off on our trip to Namibia, the hours of planning were hopefully about to come together. We had done all the research booked all our accommodation, flights and 4X4 on the internet and it was with a little trepidation that we started off to Gatwick on that July morning. We were heading for a country classified as mainly desert with dramatic escarpments made from some of the oldest rocks in the world and ancient deserts where crescentric dunes slowly march across the sand. A country with a population of only about 1.8 million although it is a third bigger than Germany and the UK combined and with a rich ethinicity.
The 21.30 flight from Gatwick was with Air Namibia - straight through to Windhoek. We had booked early and got a good deal. The airline was a little quaint and it felt like flying twenty years ago. There were even ashtrays in the seat confirming this wasn't the most up-to date of planes. Even the staff seemed dressed a little old fashioned. The female crew obviously had to wear a mustard cravat, however not one wore it the same way. You couldn't believe that it could be tied in so many ways. For my sons (14 and 15) the biggest disapointment was the lack of on board entertainment - where were the individual screens, the video games? - what were they to do for 11 hours? - good job it was an overnighter and we would spend most of it sleeping. Well getting as much sleep as you do in 'cattle class'. Turbelence over central Africa was pretty bad and shook anyone awake who had tried to get any sleep, so it was four very tired passengers that disembarked at Windhoek at 7-20 on the morning of the 13th.
